The viral video on social media shows a heroic skier rescuing a snowboarder stuck head first and burying them alive in the snow.
Francis Zuber had been skiing in the Mount Baker Ski Area in Washington when he noticed something was out of place.
Zuber’s GoPro camera captured the miraculous recovery of Ian Steger. Some sources say that a massive snow pile collapsed behind Steger as he snowboarded through the trees.
Zuber told a news outlet that he was skiing down the mountain when a “flash of color” grabbed his attention off the side, and he quickly realized someone had fallen into the snow.
He calmly yelled at the person he thought was trapped under the snow, but received no response from the other side.

When Zuber saw no response and a flash of color, he confirmed that someone was trapped and immediately began digging in the snow to rescue the victim.
In the video, Zuber clears out enough snow to reveal Steger’s face, asks him if he can breathe, and then uses a shovel to free him.
The video of the skier rescuing the snowboarder went viral after Zuber posted it on Twitter, garnering more than 650,000 views.

— NowThis (@nowthisnews) March 31, 2023Zuber also shared the footage on his Instagram account last month. “If you ski or snowboard, take a moment to watch…I started writing something really long about this experience, but I’ll save that for another time and let the video speak for itself,” he wrote in the caption.
The people who watched the video commended Zuber for keeping calm on his nerves and then rescuing Steger, who, if it were not for Zuber, would have died in that very spot.
The video shows Zuber asking Steger if he is okay while trying to dig him out of the snow. On the other hand, Steger told the station that he heard nothing as Zuber approached.
“I didn’t hear any of that. It was complete darkness. I could only hear, you know, the sound of my own breathing,” he said. Steger also said he was unsure he would make it out alive.
The moments that Steger spent trapped under the snow reminded him of everything that he wanted to do but couldn’t.
Since the rescue, he and Zuber have reunited, and they spent time together in the very place that introduced them to each other.
